Ryan This is like listening into a parallel place channeling unknown frequencies caught in the air. With an impeccable flow, this album’s stunning sonic synergy shows the genius of its curation. Beginning with A-B structures which twist and evolve through shards of hiss and noise, McDermid gradually moves towards more rhythmic no wave textures and abrasion (makes me think of Sonic Youth’s first EP), before surprising us with moments of melody and voices whispering from out of the ether. Favorite track: Scrapper.

about

"This album is a compilation of 12 tracks I made when I first started doing music, some 20 or so years ago. I went under the name Like Kisses of Thread but often did stuff under other pseudonyms also. Compared to the music I make now, back then I was interested in noise and hiss and distortion; I was influenced a lot by artists such as Peter Rehberg, Coh, Janek Schaeffer, Kaffe Matthews and Pimmon. Also, in 2001 I started a label called Nastycandy records - discogs.com/label/29232-Nastycandy-Records - which released 2 vinyl compilations as well as a Like Kisses of Thread album during its 4 year lifetime. Although some of the tracks on this compilation have been salvaged from old tapes, minidisc, an acetate/test pressing (for an unreleased EP), my album for the label, Glimpse, is where most of the pieces are from.

Glimpse was released in 2002, but it was only 2 years later that it managed to grab some attention from legendary champion of new music, John Peel. I had sent him some Nastycandy stuff many months before. One day he just called me unexpectedly saying how much he liked what the label had done and that he would play some tracks from Glimpse, in particular, over the coming weeks. He ended up playing the lead track - of both Glimpse and this compilation - The Prickly Things. This proved to be the only track he managed to play as he sadly died just 3 weeks later.

I felt I really should have some of my old tracks available online somewhere rather than being archived somewhere dark and silent. Newly remastered by Anthony Morrow, this release on Herhalen marks the first time ever that these tracks, together, have become available digitally."
